Farmers reject Punjab govt’s land acquisition policy

The Kisan Hit Bachao Committee today rejected the fresh land acquisition policy of the Punjab Government during a meeting organised at a hunger strike camp near Sohana.

The office-bearers said acquisition of land on market price would be faulty. They said earlier the Deputy Commissioner used to determine the rates of land which were lesser than the prevailing market price and now the secretary of the Revenue Department would determine the rate according to his guess or estimate.

The office bearers said the market price on the date the government issues Section 4 and when the government actually gives compensation of the acquired land has a big difference as the time gap is quite long and the market price tends to increase meanwhile.

The office-bearers added that the CM doesn’t give what he promises. They said that the CM, during the Prime Minister’s visit in Mohali, had promised to give the existing market price of land to the farmers in Sector 81 and also admitted that the rate of land in this sector is around Rs 2 crore per acre. However, when the land of four villages (Chilla, Mauli Baidwan, Kumbra and Raipur Khurd) in Sector 81 were acquired, the land price per acre was fixed at Rs 40 lakh.

They said the committee would have a talk with various political parties for implementing the land pooling scheme and the hunger strike, meanwhile, would continue. it is relevant to note that the farmers are on chain hunger strike since 915 days. Committee president Tejinder Singh Jakhar, convener DP Singh Baidwan, general secretary BS Baidwan and office secretary Pal Singh Mauli Baidwan also spoke at the meeting.
