Panchayat workers stage dharna

The agitated workers and sweepers of Panchayats that fall under the Union Territory today staged a dharna in support of their demands. Besides keeping the road near the Kisan Bhawan roundabout blocked for nearly two hours, the protestors also burnt the effigy of Union Minister for Finance P.Chidambaram while raising slogans against his deputy Pawan Kumar Bansal.

The road blockade caused inconvenience to the commuters who were caught unawares. This crossing is used by vehicles coming from Delhi and Punjab and after the dharna began, the traffic was diverted to other routes.

After the Administration banned holding of dharnas at Matka Chowk, the protestors have been holding rallies at unlikely locations in order to grab attention.

The dharna was held under the banner of Co-ordination Committee of Government and Municipal Corporation Employees and Workers (UT) Chandigarh.

Their main demands include allotting houses located in sectors 37, 38 and Sunder Colony to the employees, to shift the daily wagers and sweepers of newly-included villages to the Municipal Corporation, uniforms as per the entitlement of Class iii employees and pension.

Committee convenor Rakesh Kumar said despite repeated requests, the authorities concerned had failed to concede to their demands and solve their problems.

Co-convenor Amrik Singh said they had been struggling since long but the Administration had turned a deaf ear to their problems.
