Hosts Rajasthan stunned last year’s runners-up Punjab in a keenly fought Group B men’s encounter in the 57th Senior national basketball championship at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium here today.
The hosts, who were trailing 29-41 at half-time, fought back to score a 71-69 victory. Rajasthan levelled the score at 69 just three seconds before the close before Ashok Kumar sealed the issue with an accurate basket.
For the winners, Lokesh Yadav, Mod Singh, Sandeep and Gulwinder Singh put up a combined effort to seal the win.
For Punjab, Samardeep Singh (15) and Yogender Singh (18) were the main scorers.
in other matches of the evening session, Assam beat Pondicherry 76-48 and Uttar Pradesh got the better of Maharashtra 88-67.
Earlier, defending champions Railways beat Delhi 85-55 while Tamil Nadu defeated Madhya Pradesh 80-52.
in the women’s section, reigning champion Railways trounced Kerala 134-49 in Group A. The winners were leading 54-23 at half-time.
Anju and Seema (23 each) excelled for them while Geeta contributed 10 points. Ranjusha scored 14 points for Kerala.
in other games, Uttar Pradesh beat Assam 64-43 after leading 27-21 at the interval. Haryana beat Uttaranchal 47-22 after opening up a lead of 25-10 at half-time.
in the morning session, Haryana prevailed over Assam 28-27 and there were victories for Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka as well.
