The Centre on Friday announced the waiver of both the principal and the interest on special term loans given to the Punjab Government for combating terrorism from 1984 to 1994. The amount comes to Rs. 5,000 crore.
An official release said the decision was taken at the Union Cabinet meeting held here on Thursday. The Cabinet cleared the proposal of the Home Ministry in the backdrop of the fact that Punjab had to bear the brunt of militancy.
The announcement came even as the Election Commission on Friday announced the schedule for the elections to the Punjab Assembly.
