Birdflu confirmed in Utchal Taluka of Surat
Birdflu among chickens has been confirmed in Surat district of Gujarat, official sources said here today.

“The avian flu has been detected among some chickens from one poultry farm in Utchal Taluka. It was confirmed by the union government on two samples out of thirteen that we had sent from the region…,” Gujarat secretary for breeding and protection D K Rao told reporters.

The official said that the flu was detected in samples from Timol poultry farm in Utchal, close to avian flu affected Navapur Taluka in Nadurbar district of Maharashtra.

Various preventive measures have already been taken to prevent spread of the disease among more birds or any human, he added.

Mystery shrouds death of over 2 dozen birds in Jammu

Fear gripped the Ranbir Singh Pora belt near the Indo-Pak border in the district after the mysterious deaths of over two dozen birds, a top animal husbandry department official said here today.

Animal husbandry department director R K Dhar said that two dozen birds, mostly sparrows, died under mysterious circumstances in Derian border village yesterday.

He said samples were collected and sent to the Jalandhar- based forensic laboratory for tests, including that of bird flu.

“A medical team was sent to area and samples collected. The samples have been sent to the forensic lab in Jalandhar to test for the bird flue virus,” Dhar said.

The birds died yesterday afternoon died in the house of one Baboo Raj Chowdary. Panic stricken villagers informed the police, tehsildar and animal husbandry department, and doctors and revenue officials team rushed to area to take stock of the situation.

The birds have now been buried. “There is nothing to worry. The people should not panic as we do not think they died due to bird flu,” Dhar said, even as he did not rule out the possibility.
