Chandigarh girl tees off into men’s circuit

CHANDIGARH’S Parnita Garewal has made history by becoming the first Indian woman golfer to make the cut in a men’s professional event. The former India No. 1 amateur lady golfer achieved this feat during the Surya Nepal Masters at the majestic Gokarna Forest Golf Resort and Spa near Kathmandu on Thursday.

Her total read 165 after two rounds. At the end of today’s play, Parnita’s score was 258, and she was placed at the 56th spot. Before Parnita, only Michele Wei of the US had competed in the men’s professional circuit.

Event managers Tiger Sports Marketing claimed that Parnita, who is competing against top men golfers from India and Nepal in the Surya Masters, is the first woman to make it to a men’s pro tournament.

The Chandigarh girl sounded ecstatic at her feat. “I feel great. Initially, I was nervous but I have performed well,” she told event managers after her second round. Having been one of India’s leading amateur lady golfers, Parnita decided to turn professional last year.

She joined the likes of fellow Chandigarhian Irina Brar, Smriti Mehra Guffin, Shalini Malik and Nonita Lal Qureshi to play in the women’s pro tour run by the newly-formed Women’s Golf Association of India (WGAI).

Parnita, of Sector 16, ruled the Chandigarh Golf Club greens as a teenager. And soon she went on to become India’s No 1 woman golfer in the amateur category. However, her form and fitness took a dip in 2000 following which she took a break from the game.
