SAD will fulfill poll promises: Sukhbir

Despite the assertion of state Finance Minister that the financial position of Punjab was “grim”, SAD Working president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Friday said the party would press the government to fulfill poll promises.

Sukhbir was addressing a press conference here after meetings of District Unit Presidents, General Council and Senior leaders ratified his appointment as SAD Working President in order to lessen the burden on party supremo Parkash Singh Badal after his becoming Chief Minister.

The Political Affairs Committee (PAC) of the party had appointed him to the post recently. “The party is supreme and it will get the poll promises fulfilled from the government,” he said adding SAD was committed to fulfill various promises, including providing cheap wheat floor and cereals, ensure adequate power supply.

On the stand of Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal that the financial position of the state was grim and the mounting outstanding debt which is reaching Rs 53,000 Crore is highly unsustainable, Sukhbir said that through “economic planning” the promises would be fulfilled.

He said the state may need to provide a subsidy of around Rs 3,000 crore annually on account of cheap wheat and pulses and other benefits.

He did not agree to a questioner that he and Manpreet were talking on different lines. “I as working president have to get the promises fulfilled and Finance Minister has to decide on how to fulfill it,” Sukhbir said adding that there were no differences between the two of them.
