Punjab not informed of Virk joining Maharashtra Police

Punjab Government has no information either from the Centre or Maharashtra Government on the reported joining in Mumbai of former Punjab DGP S S Virk, suspended by the state government on charges of involvement in a controversial land deal.

Official sources in Punjab Government said they have not received any intimation as Virk continues to be on deputation to Punjab with his inter-state deputation ending on May 5.

The Punjab Government has not relieved Virk and it was not known whether the Centre had relieved him directly enabling him to report for duty in Mumbai to join Maharashtra Police as reported in a section of the media, sources said adding department action against the senior IPS officer would continue.

Chief Secretary Ramesh Inder Singh, who is in Delhi, told PTI here over phone that he had also read reports of Virk joining Maharashtra. However, “we have no intimation,” he said.

Virk, a 1970 batch IPS officer considered close to former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, was suspended by the SAD-BJP government on April four and posted at the Punjab Police Headquarters here during his suspension period.

On his removal as DGP, Virk was initially posted as posted as DGP-cum-Chairman Punjab Police Housing Corporation on January 22 and suspended earlier this month.
