In Mohali, burglars smash car’s window, take away Rs 2.65 lakh

Burglars today decamped with Rs 2.65 lakh and a 32 bore revolver from the back seat of a car, which was parked in Phase VII Bank Square. The burglars had broken the window of the car to take the money.

Kulwant Singh, owner of car number CH03P-1551, told Newsline that he had gone to HDFC Bank with his nephew to withdraw money. After taking out the money and keeping it on the back seat of the car, he drove back home. He later remembered that he had to deposit his tax in State Bank of Patiala in Bank Square.

He then parked his car in the parking lot and went to the bank. “On coming out I saw that the window of my car was smashed and the money and gun were missing,” he said.

Singh told the police that he suspects a youth (around 25-26 year old) who was in HDFC bank near the counter and in the State Bank of Patiala branch, where he had gone to deposit tax, was following him and could be involved in this.

Mohali SSP Ranbir Singh Khatara visited the spot and found that no close circuit cameras were installed in either of the banks.

The SSP said a case has been registered in this regard and the banks have been instructed to install close circuit cameras.
