A Contingent of about 100 youngsters attired like Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh was flagged off for Amritsar today.
The contingent was taken in a jeep, specially decorated to mark the birth anniversary of the great martyr.
In addition, three buses has been flagged off from the statutes of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev at Jagraon Bridge for Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar. These youngsters will participate in the birth centenary celebrations of the martyr.
Hira Singh Gabria, Jails, Tourism and Cultural Affairs Minister Punjab and Deputy Commissioner Sumer Singh Gurjar flagged off the procession.
Earlier, functions were organized at three places relating to the martyrs, viz. the ancestral house of Martyr Sukhdev Naughara at Mohalla Ludhiana, the native village of Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha at Sarabha village and at Bhaini Sahib.]
At Naughara, the function was presided over by Hira Singh Gabria, at Sarabha by former minister Jagdish Singh Garcha, and at Bhiani Sahib by Surinder Singh Namdhari. Schoolchildren presented patriotic songs, and freedom fighters of these areas paid their tributes to the martyrs.
Those present at Jagraon Bridge at the time of flagging off included Amarjit Singh Chawla, Ex-Member PPSC, SSP R K Jaiswal, ADC (G) K P Brar, President Sikh Students Federation Paramjit Singh Khalsa, member SGPC Kamal Inder Singh Thekedar, Vijay Danav, Dravid, Naresh Dhigan and Bibi Surinder Kaur Dayal.
The procession started from Jagraon Bridge. It passed through Ferozepur Road, Mullanpur, Chowki Mann Jagraon, Sidhwan Bet, Nakodar and Jalandhar, enroute for Amritsar.
Three youths holding mashals in their hands, along with 10 other youngsters, led the procession in an open jeep.
Schoolchildren and people standing on both sides of the roads welcomed the procession, shouting slogans of ‘Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh Amar Rahe’.
The procession was also given a rousing welcome at all the villages and towns falling on and near the road.
Village Panchayats and Municipal Councils had erected welcome archs and banners to welcome the procession.
