Power shortage continues to haunt Mohali residents

RESIDENTS of the new Mohali district are facing heavy power shortage with daily power cuts of more than four to five hours. When Mohali was announced a district on April 14, the Chief Minister had also announced that Mohali city would be a No Power Cut Zone. And true, it was; for a week.

Thereafter, however, power cuts started as routine. According to information from the Electricity Department Circle Mohali, the cuts are being imposed directly from Mohali. Daily cuts from 2.00 pm to 5.00 pm and 8.30 pm to 9.00 pm are imposed, as per schedule, along with additional cuts of over an hour in the mornings.

While it makes the summer worse for residents, the Industrial Sector (with weekly compulsory cut and other unscheduled cuts) and shopkeepers are worst hit. Industrialists have to use generators for power supply which increases the cost of production and many deem it better to close the factory than to use a generator. Shopkeepers complain they have to use generators for almost five hours a day.

Superintending Engineer of Electricity Board Circle Mohali, Surinder Pal, said Mohali was facing fewer cuts than other cities of Punjab. He said the power cuts were imposed by the regulatory agency, Patiala, which regulates demand and supply. On its part, the department was regularly delivering information about power cuts to residents.
