A Delegation of members of the Panjab University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) submitted a memorandum with the Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal during the inauguration of the World Punjabi Conference in Panjab University today. The memorandum pertained to the ongoing struggle for Central university status for the varsity.
Highlighting the financial crunch that PU is facing at present, the memorandum stated that the Minister of Human Resources and Development had already sent a communication to the Punjab government and UT administration, which explicitly stated that the Centre is ready to bear 100 per cent of the plan and non-plan expenditure of the university.
They demanded that the CM should give his consent to the letter lying with the Punjab government since July 2007.
The memorandum further tried to allay any doubts of the government by assuring that the university is intrinsically linked to Punjab, not only through its name but also in terms of its character, structure and the composition of its students and faculty. More than 70 per cent of the students hail from Punjab, it claimed.
Meanwhile, PUTA and the Students’ Council has called for a public protest on Monday, March 31.
Teachers, students and research scholars will be assembling at the Students’ Centre to hold their protest.
