Mohali civic body house meet: 15 councillors stage walkout

Fifteen of the total 31 councillors of the Mohali Municipal Council walked out from the MC House meeting held today. The councillors were reportedly angry over the issues of insanitation, encroachment, hoardings and failure to release pension.

Councillors Gian Chand Aggarwal and Suresh Kumar, who owe allegiance to the Kharar Congress MLA Balbir Sidhu, raised the issue of allowing illegal rehris to operate from municipal land.

Councillors Kuljit Singh Bedi, Harman Preet Singh Prince and Bharat Bhushan Maini, who support Punjab Cooperation Minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh, staged a massive demonstration at the MC Bhawan in Sector 68 and lambasted MC president Rajinder Singh Rana for failing to improve the sanitary conditions and remove illegal hoardings.

Opposition councillors raised slogans and demanded that Rana resign immediately on “moral grounds for his failures”. Councillor Rajinder Parsad Sharma raised the issue of non-release of pensions under various schemes, which were approved by the civic body long ago.

Councillor Bedi asked the MC president to give details of the action taken to improve sanitary conditions in the city — “an issue which has figured in almost every MC meeting since August 2006”.

“The monsoon has arrived but the MC chief is yet to wake up. The drainage system and the piled heaps of garbage should be cleared,” he added.

After walking out from the MC meeting, councillors from the opposition met the MC Executive Officer to apprise him of the problems and the demands of the residents.
