If everythink goes according to the plans, a number of major colonies of Panchkula will soon have a government primary school of their own.
The proposal was taken up after the need to provide education to the children of the lowest strata of society was felt during a meeting headed by Kumari Shelja, Minister of State for Poverty Alleviation.
“In the meeting, a strong need to spread the wings of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan to the lowest of the societies strata was felt. Thereafter, a special five member committee headed by Panchkula ADC Praveen Kumar was formed,†said Ravinder Rawal, Municipal Council president, who is also the member of the committee.
He added that the committee will do a complete survey of various colonies and identify land where these temporary government primary school structures would come up.
The committee will provide a report of its findings in the next meeting scheduled to be held in four months time. Rawal said that in some colonies, which are in dire need of these primary schools, they would be set up even before the meeting. “Not only this, a sum of Rs 50 lakh for the development of various colonies has also been sanctioned and the initial 40 per cent of the amount is expected anytime now.â€
For the residents of the colonies, the decision has come as a welcome news. “There can be nothing better than having an independent primary school in various colonies as the under privileged children will be able to get some basic education rather than wasting their time and getting into wrong habits,†said Sudesh Kumar, a resident of Rajiv colony.
