After capturing all the three Panchayat Samitis in Mohali district, the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Monday also claimed control over Mohali’s first Zila Parishad.
While SAD’s Satnam Singh from Mubarikpur zone was unanimously elected as the new chairman, Gurvinder Singh from Jaula Kalan zone was selected as the new vice-chairman. Sources said two of the total 10 newly-elected members of the Zila Parishad, from the Congress party, also did not oppose the appointment of SAD members.
Besides having eight Zila Parishad members in the house of 10 members, the SAD also has three ex-officio members with voting rights. They were chairmen of Kharar, Majri and Dera Bassi Panchayat Samitis, who were present at the meeting on Monday. Mohali Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) (General) Jaspal Mittal said that Mukesh Rana of the SAD from Lalru zone proposed the name of Satnam, which was seconded by Charanjit Singh from Mullanpur Garibdas zone.
