Badal lays stone of SGPC varsity

The foundation stone of the SGPC-funded Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University was laid here today by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. He also dedicated to the nation a monument on the campus called Minar-e-Ikonkar to mark the tricentenary celebrations of Guru Granth Sahib’s installation in Amritsar. Construction on the 84-acre campus would begin soon.

Badal said the varsity would start some courses from the next academic session, starting in September 1 next year. “It will not only carry out research on humanity and various Sikh aspects, but will also carry out comparative studies of other religions, besides starting courses in emerging technologies, including bio-technology, nano-technology and information technology,” said Badal.

The university has been established under the Punjab State Act of 2008. It would be run by an 11-member trust and be funded the SGPC.

SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar said the university was the outcome of four years of planning the SGPC would spend Rs 450 crore on providing infrastructure.

SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal lauded SGPC’s efforts in setting up quality educational institutions.

Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh and Jathedar, Sri Keshgarh Sahib, Giani Tarlochan Singh, also spoke on the occasion. Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal and several ministers of the state givernment were present on the occasion.
