Punjab govt employees block NH-21

Punjab government employees today blocked National Highway-21 between Mohali and Kharar for two hours, demanding implementation of the recommendations of the Fifth Pay Commission before the ensuing Lok Sabha polls.

Hundreds of state government employees, under the banner of Joint Action Committee (JAC), gathered at the Information Collection Centre (ICC) of the Sales Tax department in Balongi, close to Mohali, and squatted on the middle of the highway to block the traffic.

The protesters were demanding implementation of Fifth Pay Commission.

“When the Centre and 18 other states had adopted the report, why not Punjab doing so,” questioned the agitated employees and accusing the ruling SAD-BJP combine of adopting the “anti-employees” stand before the ensuing elections.

Hundreds of vehicles remained stranded on both sides of the Highway with commuters coming out to take on the protesters, leading to a total chaos.

Meanwhile, some of the commuters alleged that police remained mute spectators and made no effort to persuade the protesters, who themselves ended their protest after two hours. MORE
