Leaders canvassing for final round

Leaders of political parties in India have fanned out for an intense campaigning in the last and final round of polling – scheduled for May 13 – for 86 Lok Sabha seats in seven states and two union territories, although 85 constituencies in seven states and New Delhi go to elections today (Thursday) to decide the fate of 1,315 candidates in the fray. The main interest in the last round will be in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, comprising 40 seats, as it will play a crucial role in formation of the government, depending on which group – the one led by DMK or the rival led by AIADMK of Jayalalithaa – gets the majority.

The balloting will be completed today in New Delhi (seven constituencies), Rajasthan (25) and Haryana (10). The polling will also be over in Bihar, while Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir will go into elections on May 13. In the May 13 round, elections will take place for 17 seats in West Bengal, 18 in Uttar Pradesh, four in Punjab and one in Kashmir. The electorate for this round will be 9.47 crores, who will cast their votes on 306,000 electronic voting machines at 123,000 booths, manned by around 650,000 staff. iftikhar gilani
