Chandigarh admn asks contract teachers to join duty

The Chandigarh administration has advised contractual teachers sitting on hunger strike to resume their official duties as soon as the schools reopen. The administration has further clarified that the services of these employees cannot be regularized in view of Supreme Court directions.

Contractual employees are demanding regularization of their services and their plea has already been declined by court. The apex court allowed UT administration to grant only relaxation in age in new recruitment of teachers. These employees have been demanding exemption from test being conducted for recruitment of 536 teachers.

Home secretary Ram Niwas clarified that contractual teachers should not shy away from appearing in the test as contractual teachers are highly qualified having graduate, post graduate degrees. He further informed that the UT administration has all sympathy for the employees and their family members.

‘However, we are not in a position either to exempt them from this test or to regularize their services,’ he said. Administration has agreed to provide four types of benefits to contractual employees. Officials are of the view that services of contractual employees won’t be terminated in view of recruitment of 536 teachers.
