Charting their own course: From rural Punjab to CLTA

For Sandeep Tahkur and Vaishali Thakur, the journey from the rural outskirts of Punjab to the CLTA’s Rural Programme means a lot. The two girls, who have been selected in the CLTA’s CHART scheme, have the privilege of being the first two girls selected in the scheme and are looking forward to their stint at CLTA.

Vaishali Thakur belongs to Lohgarh village of Gurdaspur district and has now opted for tennis after initially choosing athletics as a career. Daughter of a retired jawan of Army, Vaishali is hopeful of making a mark in the game.

“I am really privileged to be selected as we will get good facilities here and we can achieve our goal of becoming a good tennis player,” said Thakur who will be now studying in DAV Public School, Sector 8. Major Singh, Vaishali’s father and a retired army jawan sounded ecstatic about his daughter getting selected for CLTA.

“I am happy that my daughter will now study in a good school and I want her to earn a name for her and do well in life,” said Singh. Sandeep Kaur, the other girl to be selected in the programme belongs to a small village in Faridkot district.

The 11-year-old player is hopeful of doing well in the game. “I can now fulfill my dreams of becoming a tennis star and now I can also study in a good school which seemed to be a distant dream in the village,” said Sandeep. Sandeep’s father, Major Singh, who works as a daily wager, believes that Sandeep will now a get a chance to fulfill her dream.
