RITES report says no bumpy ride on 90% city roads

There is a 405-km road network in Chandigarh, and 90 per cent of it is in good condition. As per the report submitted to the UT Administration by Rail India Technical and Economic Services Ltd (RITES), only 2 per cent of the total road length has poor road surface condition.

As per the report, of the total network, 59 per cent roads have six or more lanes, 26 per cent are four-lane, 10 per cent are two-lanes and 5 per cent have intermediate lanes. In its report, RITES, which is the UT consultant on its proposed monorail project, has also stated that 77 per cent city residents are willing to shift to a good public transport system.

Of the 77 per cent, 53 per cent are willing to shift if they can save in travel time up to 10 minutes. Rest won’t mind shifting if the time saved is about 30 minutes. As per the survey, 30 per cent respondents do not want the fare for new public transport to change, while 27 per cent won’t mind paying 1.25 times more than the existing fares. As many as 18 per cent people are willing to pay 1.5 times more.

Rites also carried a traffic survey of city roads. As per its report, the intensity of traffic within the city is highest at Housing Board Chowk, followed by Madhya Marg, between Sector 18 and 8.

The morning peak hour traffic varies from 291 vehicles on Panchkula-Sector 6 road to 7,838 vehicles on the Housing Board Chowk. The evening peak hour volume varies from 278 vehicles on Panchkula-Sector 6 road to 6,157 vehicles on Madhya Marg between Sectors 18 and 8.

As per the report, the Housing Board Chowk has maximum passenger trips of 1,29,582 daily, whereas the Sector 6 road in Panchkula has minimum passenger trips of 6,349 daily.

The report states that a survey was conducted at 97 bus stops and it was found that the maximum boarding takes place at Sector 22 stop, near subway, on Udyog Path towards Sector 23. Maximum bus passengers were found alighting at PGI, Sector 12.
