The Ghaggar bridge in Nada Sahib is scheduled to be opened to traffic by tomorrow evening. The bridge was closed on September 18 by the Public Works Department (Bridge and Roads) for carrying out special repair works.
PWD (B&R) executive engineer P.K. Goyal said they were working overtime to open the bridge by tomorrow evening. Majority of the work has been completed. “In case of any unseen contingency, we assure that the bridge would be open by Sunday morning to traffic,” he said.
Opening of the bridge to the traffic would come as a major relief for the thousands of commuters using this to take a detour through Ramgarh to Dera Bassi, following the closure of Dera Bassi bridge.
After the Dera Bassi Ghaggar bridge was closed to traffic, heavy vehicles, such as trucks and buses, used this as an alternative route.
For commuters going to and from Chandigarh on the NH-21, the lone alternative was Ramgarh, using the Ghaggar bridge through Sector 21 and 3. Besides, devotees headed for Nada Sahib gurdwara and commuters from Chandigarh (via Panchkula) to Morni were also forced to use the Sector 21/3 Ghaggar bridge.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Roadways and Transport has sanctioned Rs 1.16 crore for the special repair work on Bhanu, Baliyali, and Mattawali bridges on the NH-73 (Panchkula-Saharanpur).
The bridges would have to be closed for 15-20 days during the repair of expansion joints, bearings and surface parts.
According to officials, the department is exploring the possibility of having alternative routes for the under-repair bridges.
“In case we do not find the alternative route, we will have a diversion road from below the three bridges,” they said.
